Dubai: Tensions were simmering ahead of Saturday’s Asia Cup Super 4 clash between India and Pakistan, as Pakistan abruptly cancelled their pre-match press conference on the eve of the high-stakes encounter. The move came in the wake of last Sunday’s seven-wicket loss to India and the lingering “handshake controversy” that cast a shadow over the rivalry. No official explanation was given for the cancellation, but sources suggested Pakistan’s players were keen to avoid questions about the ongoing spat involving match official Andy Pycroft. The former Zimbabwe cricketer, who was reportedly set to officiate Sunday’s game, has been at the centre of a dispute since the group stage.

The PCB had demanded Pycroft’s removal after their seven-wicket defeat to India, alleging he instructed captain Salman Agha to skip the customary handshake at the toss. The ICC rejected PCB’s request, allowing Pycroft to continue in his role. The fallout carried into Pakistan’s must-win clash against the UAE. In a dramatic turn, Pakistan arrived late at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, delaying the start by nearly an hour.
Players were asked to remain at their hotel while PCB officials held urgent discussions with the ICC. Tensions escalated further when Pakistan’s management met with Pycroft just before the toss—a meeting that sparked fresh controversy. The PCB briefly posted a muted video of the exchange on social media. As India and Pakistan prepared to meet again, the unresolved friction added another layer of intrigue to an already electric rivalry. With Pakistan opting for silence ahead of the game, all eyes would now be on the field.
