Italy successfully defended its Billie Jean King Cup title with a 2-0 victory over the United States in Shenzhen, securing its sixth overall championship. The win makes Italy the first nation since the Czech Republic in 2016 to claim back-to-back titles, highlighting the depth and resilience of its squad.
World No.8 Jasmine Paolini set the tone for Italy in the final, delivering a dominant 6-4, 6-2 win over Jessica Pegula. Paolini had previously lost to Pegula in five encounters but controlled the match with precise serving and aggressive baseline play. Her performance put Italy on the path to victory and demonstrated her emergence as a top player on the big stage.

Following Paolini’s lead, world No.91 Elisabetta Cocciaretto added another crucial win, upsetting U.S. No.2 Emma Navarro 6-4, 6-4. Cocciaretto rallied from 2-4 down in the second set, breaking Navarro twice to give Italy an unassailable advantage. Together, their singles victories made a doubles rubber unnecessary.
"It was an unbelievable match for me. I knew that she's a really great player and I had to play my best tennis ... I'm really happy about the performance and the point that I gave to Italy," Cocciaretto said after her win over Navarro.
Italy’s road to the final had not been easy. In the semifinals against Ukraine, Paolini overcame Elina Svitolina in three sets before teaming with veteran Sara Errani to win the decisive doubles match. Earlier wins, including solid performances against China in the quarterfinals, demonstrated the team’s consistency and fighting spirit.
For the United States, the loss extends their title drought, with their last victory dating back to 2017. Despite historical success and depth in their squad, the Americans were unable to match Italy’s execution in crucial moments.
Italy’s consecutive triumphs underline the emergence of a new powerhouse in women’s team tennis. With Paolini’s top-10 form, Cocciaretto’s breakthrough performance, and Errani’s experience, the Italian team has shown remarkable balance and determination, cementing their legacy in the Billie Jean King Cup.
