The race walking events presented a similarly tough challenge for India. In the men’s 35km, Ram Baboo was disqualified after receiving his fourth red card, having completed 24km. Baboo, who holds the national record at 2:29:56 and finished 27th at the 2023 Budapest World Championships, was one of six athletes disqualified from a starting field of 50. Ten others did not finish, leaving 34 to complete the race.
Sandeep Kumar, a 39-year-old last-minute qualifier, managed to finish 23rd in 2:39:15. The hot and humid conditions proved challenging, preventing him from matching his personal and season best of 2:35:06.
In the women’s 35km event, national record holder Priyanka Goswami finished 24th in a field of 46, timing 3:05:58. She spent over three minutes in the penalty box after receiving her third red card but managed to complete the race. Her national record stands at 2:56:34. One athlete was disqualified, while seven others did not finish.
The first day highlighted the immense physical and mental demands of competing at the highest level. For India, it was a day of lessons more than results. Athletes like Pooja, Sandeep, and Priyanka will look to regroup and improve in their upcoming events, seeking stronger performances in the days ahead. Despite the initial setbacks, the resilience and determination of these athletes remain the key takeaway from the championship’s opening chapter.
