Jaiswal Eyes Gavaskar's Record in Edgbaston Test
Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal is on the cusp of making history, needing just 97 runs to become the fastest Indian to reach 2,000 Test runs. The young left-hander has his sights set on breaking Sunil Gavaskar’s 49-year-old record when India takes on England in the second Test at Edgbaston, starting July 2.

Jaiswal’s consistency has been a significant positive for India during a challenging transition period in the longest format. He recently demonstrated his talent with a superb century in the first Test at Headingley, although his effort wasn't enough to prevent India from suffering a five-wicket defeat. Despite setting England a formidable 371-run target, India was stunned by Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, and Joe Root’s composed chase, giving England a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

Jaiswal’s personal form remains a major source of hope for India as they look to rebound at Edgbaston. In just 20 Tests, he has already amassed 1,903 runs at an impressive average of 52.86.
The current record for the fastest Indian to 2,000 Test runs is held by batting legend Sunil Gavaskar, who reached the milestone in his 23rd Test back in 1976. Gavaskar went on to become the first cricketer to score 10,000 Test runs. Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag follow on the list, having crossed 2,000 runs in their 25th Tests.
With his elegant strokeplay and remarkable temperament, Jaiswal now has the opportunity to join and surpass these legends, providing India with a crucial boost in a must-win Test.
