Jose Mourinho Makes Sensational Return to Benfica After Two-Decade Hiatus

Jose Mourinho has been officially unveiled as Benfica's new manager, returning to the club more than two decades after his brief initial stint. The Portuguese coach, renowned for his successes at Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Inter Milan, has signed a contract with the Lisbon-based side running until the summer of 2027. Club president Rui Costa confirmed the appointment on Thursday, with Mourinho addressing the media at Benfica's training ground in Seixal, near Lisbon.

The 62-year-old began his managerial career at Benfica in 2000, but a contract dispute cut his first term short after just three months. Over the ensuing two decades, Mourinho won Champions League glory with Porto in 2004 and built an international reputation that led to stints at Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Manchester United. Benfica moved to secure his expertise following Bruno Lage's departure after a shock Champions League defeat to Qarabag.

Mourinho's arrival comes amid a turbulent period for Benfica, who suffered a surprise early Champions League exit and currently sit sixth in the Primeira Liga, five points behind leaders Porto with a game in hand. The contract, which runs until the end of the 2026/27 season with a termination clause ten days after the campaign ends, marks Mourinho's twelfth managerial role and a full-circle return to his native Portugal, a move he had recently expressed a strong desire to make while still at the height of his career.
