Krejcikova Halts Townsend's US Open Cinderella Story, Advances to Quarterfinals

Barbora Krejcikova produced one of the great fightbacks of this year’s US Open to deny Taylor Townsend a first-ever Grand Slam singles quarter-final, edging past the American in a dramatic three-set clash on Monday.

Townsend, better known for her doubles success, made a dream start by taking the opening set and raising hopes of a landmark win on home soil. Roared on by the New York crowd, she played with confidence and variety, unsettling the 2021 French Open champion.

The match turned into an extraordinary second set, which stretched into a marathon tie-break. Townsend twice came within a point of victory, but Krejcikova refused to let go, saving chance after chance before finally snatching it 15–13.
