Madrid, Warsaw Awarded 2027 Champions League Finals: UEFA Expands European Footprint

UEFA has confirmed that the 2027 Champions League finals will be held in Madrid and Warsaw, with the men's final at Madrid's Estadio Metropolitano and the women's final at Warsaw's National Stadium. The announcement came on Thursday following a meeting of UEFA's Executive Committee in Tirana.

The 70,692-capacity Estadio Metropolitano, home of LaLiga side Atltico Madrid, previously hosted the 2019 men's Champions League final, in which Liverpool defeated Tottenham Hotspur. UEFA had delayed its decision on the 2027 venue while considering Milan's San Siro, ultimately ruling it out due to refurbishment plans. The women's final in 2027 will take place at the National Stadium in Warsaw, continuing UEFA's efforts to raise the profile of women's football across Europe.

UEFA also confirmed that the 2026 men's final will be held at Budapest's Pusks Arena, with the 2026 women's final staged at Oslo's Ullevaal Stadion. Meanwhile, the UEFA Super Cup next year is scheduled for Salzburg, Austria.

During the Tirana meeting, UEFA also addressed requests from LaLiga and Serie A to play domestic league matches abroad. Italy's FIGC has approved AC Milan's proposed fixture in Perth, Australia, while Spain's RFEF has allowed Villarreal to face Barcelona in Miami this December. UEFA said it will consult all stakeholders, including fans, before making a final decision on such proposals.

"The Executive Committee discussed the requests from the RFEF and FIGC to approve the playing of one domestic league match each outside the home country, in particular outside the UEFA territory," UEFA said in a statement. "The committee acknowledged it as an important and growing issue but expressed the desire to ensure that it has the views of all stakeholders before coming to a final decision. There are many issues to resolve, and as the European governing body, UEFA has a responsibility to take all such factors into account."

Supporters' associations across Europe have voiced strong opposition to moving domestic league matches abroad, describing the proposals as "absurd" and warning that they could undermine competition rules for short-term financial gain. UEFA emphasised the need for broad consultation, highlighting the ongoing debate over balancing the expansion of European football with the integrity of domestic competitions.
