Ravi Shastri Predicts Bright Future for Shubman Gill in Test Cricket
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has voiced his strong belief in the potential of India’s new Test captain, Shubman Gill. Shastri anticipates a successful career for Gill, stating that he would be surprised if the young captain doesn't achieve significant milestones in the coming years.
Shastri, speaking to Wisden, praised Gill's batting elegance and regal presence on the field. "I’ll be disappointed if Gill doesn’t go places. Languid, lazy elegance, and he’s got a regal element of being regal out there when he’s batting," Shastri remarked. He further emphasized the importance of adaptability for Gill, noting, "If he can learn with exposure and adapt to conditions, I think that’s the one name I can see."
Shastri also highlighted Gill's maturity in handling media interactions and press conferences. He urged consistency in team management's approach towards Gill, advocating for a three-year period of support, regardless of immediate results. "Let him be there for three years. Don’t chop and change irrespective of what happens in the series. Stick with him for three years, and I think he will deliver for you," he added.
Gill recently marked his captaincy debut with a remarkable century in Headingley, joining an elite group of Indian cricketers like Sunil Gavaskar and Virat Kohli who have achieved this feat. He became the 23rd player overall to score a century on Test captaincy debut, and the fourth-youngest to do so.
Fellow cricketer Prasidh Krishna has also commended Shubman Gill's leadership, noting the positive atmosphere he has cultivated within the team's dressing room. Krishna acknowledged Gill's effective bowler rotations and strategic decision-making during matches, emphasizing the open communication and planning within the team. "I think he did a pretty good job. All of us saw how he rotated the bowlers, made sure everybody had enough breaks, brought in people at the right times, and saw opportunities to bring in the right kind of bowlers. All of that was great, and knowing him, he set a very good atmosphere around. He’s been speaking to all of us. We always go in with a plan, and the communication is happening there."
