Coco Gauff, the No. 3 seed and 2023 US Open champion, delivered a commanding performance on Saturday, August 30, defeating Poland’s Magdalena Frech 6-3, 6-1 to secure her place in the fourth round. The early-morning match showcased a composed and controlled Gauff, a sharp contrast to the emotional swings of her earlier rounds.
Importantly, she avoided the double-fault struggles that had hampered her previous outings—holding serve cleanly in her opening game and never facing an early break.
US Open 2025 Day 7 Updates
In the first set, Gauff raced to a 3-0 lead with an early break, but Frech fought back to level at 3-3. From there, Gauff raised her level, reclaiming the break and closing out the set in 42 minutes. The second set was one-way traffic, as Gauff broke Frech three times while never surrendering her own serve. She sealed the win in just an hour and 13 minutes, underlining her growing confidence and rhythm.
With the victory, Gauff advanced to the last 16, where she will face the winner of the clash between Naomi Osaka and Daria Kasatkina.
Italian 10th seed Lorenzo Musetti advanced to his maiden US Open Round 4 when compatriot Flavio Cobolli retired with a wrist injury while trailing 6-3, 6-2, 2-0 in their third-round clash on Saturday.
Musetti had earlier delivered a commanding performance, beating Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in four sets, 7-6(3), 3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the first round followed by his 6-4, 6-0, 6-2 win over David Goffin in the second round.
Cobolli's abrupt exit made the victory bittersweet, compounded by their close off-court friendship.
“I didn’t want to finish the match like that, especially against Flavio. He’s probably my best friend on tour. We’ve known each other since we were nine, our families know each other well, and we’ve spent many hours together on and off the court throughout our careers.
"First of all, a big round of applause for Flavio, please. It’s a bittersweet end, but I’m happy to reach the fourth round for the first time,” Musetti said in the on-court interview.
“I wish him the best of luck to recover soon and be healthy again.”
In the pre-quarters, Musetti will face the winner of the match between Jaume Munar and Zizou Bergs.
