The Indian wrestling team suffered a major setback at the Wrestling World Championships in Zagreb as star wrestler Aman was disqualified for being overweight ahead of his event.
According to a report by PTI, Aman, competing in the men’s freestyle 57kg category, exceeded the weight limit by 1.7kg during the official weigh-in. The 22-year-old, who trains at the renowned Chhattrasal Stadium, was among India’s strong medal contenders.
Aman had joined the Indian contingent in Zagreb on 25 August for an acclimatisation camp, giving him sufficient time to make weight. However, that proved insufficient. A source within the team was quoted as saying, "It’s unfortunate and surprising that Aman could not maintain his weight. He was overweight by 1700 grams when he stood on the scale. This is not acceptable. How he gained so much extra weight is beyond us."
This marks the second disqualification involving an Indian wrestler at a World Championships in less than a month. In August, Neha Sangwan (women’s 59kg) was removed from the U20 Worlds in Samokov, Bulgaria, after exceeding her weight limit by 600g. Neha, who was also part of India’s senior squad in Zagreb, was not only dropped from the team but also received a two-year suspension from the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) for consistent weight management issues.
For Aman, this incident is particularly notable as it comes after high-profile disqualifications like Vinesh Phogat’s at the Paris Olympics, where she was found overweight by 100g just hours before her women’s 50kg final.
A coach with the Indian contingent expressed frustration over the situation, highlighting the resources invested in the athletes, "The government has spent at least 7–8 lakh on each wrestler for the World Championship in Zagreb. Accommodation and training costs were significant. It is the wrestler’s responsibility to maintain weight. Almost 2kg over the limit is unbelievable."
It remains unclear whether the WFI will impose any disciplinary action on Aman similar to that given to Neha, or if his star status will influence the decision. The disqualification is a major blow to India
