Alcaraz Concedes to Wimbledon Nerves After Five-Set Opening Round Battle

Carlos Alcaraz confessed to feeling the pressure of the occasion during his first-round Wimbledon match against Fabio Fognini. The two-time champion found himself in a challenging five-set battle before ultimately securing victory.

Alcaraz highlighted the significant weight he felt stepping onto Centre Court. The match proved to be unexpectedly difficult for the Spaniard against the resilient Italian veteran.

Despite his experience and status as a top player, Alcaraz admitted to experiencing nerves akin to a first-time competitor. He emphasized that his struggles weren't due to inadequate preparation, but rather the magnitude of the event.

"It felt like it was the first time. Wimbledon is different," Alcaraz told reporters. He acknowledged the privilege of playing on Centre Court and his efforts to manage his initial nervousness. "Being the first match on Centre Court, it's a huge privilege for me... I try to deal with the nerves in the best way possible. I was struggling a little bit ... But it was great. It's a big honour to start the tournament there on Centre Court.”

Alcaraz Remains Grounded, Respects All Opponents

Looking ahead to the second round, Alcaraz is slated to face British qualifier Oliver Tarvet. While many anticipate an easy win for the defending champion against an opponent ranked in the 700s, Alcaraz remains cautious.

He insists on approaching every match with respect, regardless of the opponent's ranking. Alcaraz emphasized his commitment to delivering his best performance each time he steps onto the court.

"If he's here, he's in the second round; it's because he deserves it. He's playing great tennis. I don't have to think like I'm going to win easily. I have to have respect for him."

He further added, "Playing or trying to play my best, step on the court thinking that if I don't play my best, I can lose... I have to think that it's going to be a really tough match. It's going to be a difficult one I have to be ready for, and I'm trying to play my best without thinking about the ranking and anything else."

Tarvet secured a notable victory against 28th seed Alexander Blockx, demonstrating his capabilities. Alcaraz aims to elevate his game and gain momentum as he progresses through the tournament.
