Sri Lanka have announced a strong 15-member squad for the Women’s World Cup 2025, scheduled from September 30 to November 2. Chamari Athapaththu, the team’s most experienced player with 3877 runs and 45 wickets in 115 ODIs, will lead the side in the global event.
The squad reflects a strategic blend of seasoned campaigners and emerging talent. Athapaththu’s leadership and experience remain the backbone of the team, while several youngsters have been rewarded for recent form.
Among them is Dewmi Vihanga, who starred in the tri-nation ODI series hosted by Sri Lanka in April-May 2025. The young bowler claimed 11 wickets, including a five-wicket haul, and established herself as one of the team’s key strike options.
Harshitha Samarawickrama and Vishmi Gunaratne are also players to watch. Harshitha, 27, has scored 1,075 runs in 41 ODIs, including a century and multiple fifties. She was named ICC Player of the Month for August 2024 after her match-winning innings in the Asia Cup final against India.
Gunaratne, meanwhile, broke into the national side after the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup and has since scored 567 runs in 25 matches at just 20 years of age.
Sri Lanka open their campaign against Harmanpreet Kaur’s India in the tournament opener at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati on September 30. Alongside the younger names, the side will bank on experienced performers such as Inoka Ranaweera, Udeshika Prabodani and Hasini Perera to add depth and balance.
