Despite India's recent Test defeat against England, head coach Gautam Gambhir has voiced his support for the team's lower-order batsmen, emphasizing that failures are a part of the game.
India's loss at Headingley was particularly disheartening, with the team surrendering a strong position after two significant batting collapses. They lost 7 wickets for 41 runs in the first innings and 6 for 31 in the second.
Following the match, Shubman Gill, who marked his captaincy debut with a century in the first innings, mentioned that the team was aiming for a target of around 435 runs. However, Gautam Gambhir believes that India could have dominated the match had they reached a score of 570 or 580 in the first innings.
Gambhir defended the lower order, stating that their dismissals weren't due to a lack of effort. He acknowledged the disappointment within the team, recognizing their awareness of the missed opportunity.
"It's not that they weren't applying themselves. Sometimes people fail. And that's okay," Gambhir said. "Even proper batters fail. Hopefully, they'll learn, and hopefully we'll get better performances from our tail."
He also highlighted the team's poor catching performance as a significant factor in the defeat. India dropped seven catches during the game, with Yashasvi Jaiswal being a repeat offender. Ben Duckett, who was dropped on 97, went on to score a crucial 149. Gill emphasized the need to improve their catching standards.
Gill said, "Chances don't come easy, especially on wickets like these, and we dropped quite a few catches. But I think we have got a young team, still a learning one, and hopefully, in the next matches, we'll be able to improve on those aspects."
Gambhir dismissed the notion of using the team's youth as an excuse for the loss. He emphasized the pride associated with representing India and the commitment to winning every game.
"Every defeat is bad. It's not about a young team or an experienced team. It's an Indian team... A young team is not an excuse... We will turn up every Test match thinking that we can win the test match and win the series."
Gambhir also confirmed that Jasprit Bumrah will only play two more Test matches in the series to manage his workload, a decision that was made before the series began. The specific matches are yet to be determined.
"Before he came on the show, it was already decided that he's going to play three Test matches... We haven't decided which two other Test matches he's going to play," Gambhir stated.
He expressed confidence in the team's bowling attack, even without Bumrah, emphasizing that the squad is selected based on trust and belief in their abilities.
