The stage is set for the fourth season of the SA20, with teams now permitted to retain up to six players before the highly anticipated auction. The league officially announced that the auction will be held in Johannesburg on September 9th.
With a minimum of 72 slots available across the six teams, the upcoming auction promises intense bidding wars. Adding to the excitement, the salary purse for each team has been significantly increased to USD 2.3 million. This move allows franchises to aggressively pursue top talent and build formidable squads.
Each franchise can retain a maximum of six players, with a limitation of no more than three international players among those retained. This rule encourages teams to invest in and develop local South African talent.
Here's a breakdown of the SA20 squad composition rules:
The SA20 is also introducing a Right To Match (RTM) card for the first time. This strategic tool allows franchises to match the winning bid for a player who represented them in the previous season, ensuring they have the opportunity to retain valuable players. The number of RTM cards available to each franchise will depend on the number of South African players they retain.
A significant change for this season is the removal of the Rookie Draft. Instead, teams are now required to include a minimum of two Under-23 players in their final 19-player squads. This shift aims to promote youth development and provide opportunities for emerging cricketers.
Stephen Cook, Head of Cricket Operations at SA20, expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming auction. "The SA20 Season 4 Player Auction is setting up to be the most exciting yet, with about 60% of player slots available for the franchises to fill," he stated. "Mechanisms such as RTM cards, Wildcard players and an increased salary cap are sure to create interesting situations for teams and will allow them to strategically select their squads. We have seen some life-changing transactions already in the past few years and the upcoming auction should see plenty more."
Richard Madley will continue his role as the auctioneer for the fourth season. The SA20 Season 4 is scheduled to commence on December 26th, promising another thrilling season of T20 cricket.
