Akash Deep's Sister Faces Cancer with Courage, Urges Pacer: 'Focus on India' Amidst Edgbaston Triumph

Akash Deep's recent 10-wicket haul at Edgbaston was not just a personal triumph but also a deeply emotional moment for his family. The Indian pacer dedicated his performance to his sister, Akhand Jyoti Singh, who is currently battling cancer. In an exclusive interview with Aajtak, Akhand Jyoti shared her reaction to her brother's achievement and her ongoing treatment.

Before the England tour, Akhand Jyoti had a heartfelt conversation with Akash Deep, urging him to prioritize his game and not be burdened by her health. "I told him, 'I’m absolutely fine, don’t worry about me, just do well for the country,'" she revealed. Learning that Akash dedicated the victory to her on live television was a surprise. Jyoti stated that she was proud of Akash and that his performance brought immense joy to their family during a challenging time.

Facing Cancer with Optimism

Akhand Jyoti disclosed that she is in the third stage of cancer and requires another six months of treatment. Despite the difficulties, she maintains a positive outlook.

"It makes me very happy when Akash takes wickets," she shared. "Whenever he gets a wicket, all of us start clapping and cheering so loudly that the neighbours in the colony ask what has happened!"

Balancing Cricket and Family

During the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, Akhand Jyoti was hospitalized for her cancer treatment. Despite a busy schedule with the Lucknow Super Giants, Akash Deep consistently visited her. He played six IPL matches that season, securing three wickets.

"When the IPL was going on and he was playing for the Lucknow team, I was admitted to the hospital for cancer treatment. Even then, he would come meet me either before or after the matches," she recounted.

After India's historic win at Edgbaston, the siblings shared an emotional video call. "Akash told me, ‘Don’t worry, the whole country is with us.’ He said, ‘I couldn’t hold it in anymore. I had been trying to, but yesterday I just couldn’t stop myself.’"

She added, "Such a brother is rare. He helps us a lot and doesn’t do anything without talking to us. He shares everything with the family... he is the one now managing the whole household."

"Everything I Have Is For My Sister"

Akash Deep is emerging as a key player in the Indian Test team, known for his ability to seam and swing the ball.

Akash Deep's sister shared the pacer's promise to dedicate all his success to her.

"During my cancer treatment, he was the one who motivated me the most... he would always say, ‘Everything I have is for my sisters and my family.’"

Looking Forward

Jyoti eagerly anticipates Akash Deep's return from England, eager to show her affection through home-cooked meals. "When he comes again, I’ll cook whatever he asks for... Whenever he comes home, he asks me to make those," she concluded.
