Gupta brings a wealth of experience from the Indian sports and media landscape. Currently, he serves as the CEO of Sports & Live Experiences at JioStar. His background includes over two decades in content, strategy, and operations, where he has significantly influenced the sports broadcasting scene in India.
ICC Chairman Jay Shah expressed his enthusiasm for Gupta's appointment, highlighting his leadership qualities and the importance of his expertise for the ICC's future growth.
"Sanjog's extensive experience in sports strategy and commercialization will be invaluable to the ICC," Shah stated. "His profound understanding of global sports, media, and entertainment, coupled with his dedication to technology and the cricket fan experience, will be crucial as we aim to broaden cricket's reach, especially with the Olympic inclusion on the horizon."
Gupta's selection followed a comprehensive global recruitment effort that attracted over 2,500 candidates from 25 countries. The ICC's Nominations Committee, including figures like Imran Khwaja and Richard Thompson, played a key role in shortlisting candidates, ultimately recommending Gupta. The ICC Board subsequently ratified the decision.
Upon his designation as CEO, Gupta conveyed his sense of privilege and dedication to advancing cricket's global presence.
"These are exciting times for cricket as major events gain prominence, commercial opportunities expand, and aspects like the women's game gain popularity," Gupta remarked. "The inclusion of cricket in the LA28 Olympics and rapid technological advancements present transformative possibilities. I am eager to collaborate with ICC Member Boards to expand cricket's global footprint and enhance the fan experience."
Gupta began his career in journalism before joining Star India in 2010, where he progressed to lead its sports division. As Head of Sports at Disney Star from 2020, he spearheaded innovations such as multi-language broadcasts, digital-first programming, and enhanced coverage of women's cricket. He also played a pivotal role in boosting the popularity of major leagues and events, including the IPL, ICC events, and domestic leagues like the ISL and PKL.
In November 2024, Gupta was appointed CEO of JioStar Sports following the merger of Viacom18 and Disney Star, leading a significant sports media entity.
